Footfall Tracking vs Engagement Tracking

Footfall tracking tells a retailer how many people moved through a space. Engagement tracking tells a brand or retailer what shoppers did when they reached a product, display or digital touchpoint. Both are useful, but they operate at different levels of insight.

Footfall is a location signal. It helps evaluate traffic, store zones, fixture placement and potential exposure. If a display is in a low-traffic area, footfall data can explain why engagement is limited. But footfall alone cannot show whether shoppers understood a product, compared options or took a next step.

Engagement tracking is an action signal. It captures behaviours such as QR scans, touchscreen sessions, content views, product finder usage, poll responses and retailer PDP clicks. These behaviours are closer to consideration. They show not just that shoppers were nearby, but that they chose to interact.

The difference is important for connected retail. A footfall sensor may show that a thousand people passed an aisle. That does not mean a thousand people noticed the campaign. A QR or touchscreen journey may show that eighty shoppers engaged deeply with a product story. That smaller number can be more useful for understanding intent.

For retailers, footfall and engagement should work together. Footfall explains the opportunity; engagement explains the quality of the interaction. If footfall is high but engagement is low, the display may not be clear or compelling. If footfall is low but engagement is high, the content may be strong but the location may need improvement.

MyPlayer focuses on the engagement layer. It can sit alongside footfall systems, but its purpose is different. It helps brands and retailers understand what shoppers explore, compare and continue with once they are at the point of purchase. That makes it a useful complement to connected retail infrastructure rather than a replacement for traffic measurement.
