Passive Impressions vs Active Engagement

Passive impressions and active engagement measure very different things. A passive impression suggests that a shopper may have been exposed to a message. Active engagement shows that a shopper took an action: scanning, tapping, browsing, answering, comparing or clicking onward.

Both can be useful, but they should not be treated as equal. Impressions are helpful when measuring potential reach. They can show that a campaign had visibility in a high-traffic store or that content was displayed across a network. But impressions alone do not tell a brand whether the message was useful, whether the shopper understood the product or whether anyone showed intent.

Active engagement is a stronger signal of interest. A shopper who scans a QR code, uses a product finder or taps through product content is doing more than passing a display. They are investing attention. For complex purchases, that middle layer is especially important because shoppers may need education before they are ready to buy.

The challenge in physical retail is that passive exposure is easier to estimate than active decision-making. Footfall, screen plays and store traffic can create a broad view, but they do not show what happened at product level. Interactive touchpoints can provide that next layer by capturing what shoppers actually chose to explore.

This does not mean impressions are worthless. Retail media still needs reach. But reach without engagement can leave brands guessing. If sales uplift is strong, the brand may not know which content helped. If sales uplift is weak, the brand may not know whether the problem was location, creative, range relevance or the journey after exposure.

MyPlayer helps shift the conversation from whether content was visible to whether it was used. By measuring active engagement across QR codes, touchscreens and content journeys, brands and retailers can understand the quality of attention, not just the possibility of exposure.
