Retail Media vs Digital Signage

Digital signage is a delivery format. Retail media is a commercial media proposition. That distinction is important because many in-store projects are described as retail media when they are really signage networks with advertising content. A screen playing a brand message may be part of retail media, but it is not automatically a complete retail media product.

Digital signage usually focuses on deployment questions: where is the screen, what content is playing, how often does it update and is the hardware online? Retail media focuses on commercial questions: what audience is being reached, what inventory is being sold, how is campaign value measured and how can brands understand the effect of their investment?

The gap becomes clear in reporting. Signage can often prove that a message was scheduled or displayed. Retail media needs to show why that display mattered. Did shoppers engage? Did they scan? Did they browse the product range? Did they use a finder or comparison tool? Did they click through to a retailer page? These questions move the conversation from content playback to shopper behaviour.

For retailers, this is the difference between selling space and selling value. A screen network can be a starting point, but brand advertisers increasingly expect better evidence than a proof-of-play report. They want to know whether the media helped shoppers understand products, consider alternatives or move closer to purchase.

For brands, the distinction also changes the creative brief. Digital signage creative often has to be short, visual and repeated. In-store retail media can include deeper content layers: QR journeys, touchscreens, product stories, polls, quizzes, comparison modules and retailer-safe calls to action. The media is no longer only a broadcast; it becomes an interactive decision environment.

MyPlayer sits in that space between retail content and measurable media. It can work with screens, but the focus is the engagement layer around them. The aim is not simply to display more brand assets in store. It is to turn physical retail touchpoints into measurable content journeys that retailers can package and brands can learn from.
