What Makes a Retail Display Interactive?

A display is interactive when the shopper changes the experience by taking an action.

The interaction test

Ask a simple question: can the customer choose, answer, scan, tap, compare, browse or continue? If the answer is yes, the display is interactive. If the customer can only watch, the display is passive.

Types of interaction

Interaction can be lightweight or deep. A QR scan is a personal mobile interaction. A touchscreen tap is a shared physical interaction. A quiz captures preference. A comparison tool captures consideration. A product finder turns shopper need into a recommended range.

Why interaction quality matters

Not all interaction is valuable. A screen that asks the shopper to tap through confusing menus may perform worse than a simple QR code with a strong call to action. Good interaction shortens the path to understanding.

What to measure

Useful metrics include sessions, product views, feature engagement, comparison behaviour, quiz answers, poll responses, drop-off points and onward clicks. These signals help explain how the display is working.
