Closed-Loop Attribution vs Engagement Attribution

Closed-loop attribution and engagement attribution are both useful, but they answer different questions. Closed-loop attribution tries to connect media exposure to a purchase. Engagement attribution tries to understand what shoppers did between exposure and purchase.

Closed-loop attribution is powerful when the media channel and transaction data can be connected reliably. It can help show whether exposed shoppers bought more than unexposed shoppers, or whether a campaign changed sales behaviour. In retail media, this is one of the reasons retailers are attractive media owners.

The challenge is that in-store journeys are rarely perfectly closed. A shopper may be exposed in a store but buy online. They may use a QR code and then return days later. They may buy through another branch of the retailer journey. They may be influenced by staff, reviews, promotions or stock availability. The loop can be messy.

Engagement attribution does not try to pretend every journey is closed. It measures active behaviour at the touchpoint: scans, sessions, taps, product views, comparison behaviour, quiz responses, product finder answers and retailer pathway clicks. These signals show that the shopper did more than pass by.

The two approaches should be combined. Closed-loop attribution can show commercial outcomes where data is available. Engagement attribution can explain whether the campaign created consideration and intent. Together, they provide a better picture than either one alone.

For example, a campaign might show modest immediate sales uplift but very high engagement with a product comparison tool. That may suggest the campaign is helping shoppers evaluate a complex product, even if the purchase happens later. Another campaign might show sales uplift but low engagement, suggesting external factors may have contributed.

For MyPlayer, engagement attribution is especially important because the platform operates at the point where physical media becomes digital action. A QR code or touchscreen interaction creates evidence that can be connected to store, product, campaign and content context.

Brands should not treat engagement attribution as a softer substitute for sales. It is a different layer of evidence. It helps teams understand the quality of attention, the depth of consideration and the likely role of the in-store experience.

The practical answer is simple: use closed-loop data when it is available, but do not wait for perfect closed-loop proof before measuring shopper behaviour. In physical retail, engagement is often the clearest evidence that the media mattered.
