In-Store Retail Media Attribution

In-store retail media attribution is the process of understanding how physical retail media contributes to shopper behaviour and commercial outcomes. It is harder than online attribution because the store does not behave like a closed digital environment. Shoppers can see an in-store message, speak to staff, compare products on their phone, leave the store and buy later.

A useful attribution model therefore needs more than one layer. The first layer is delivery: which stores were included, which touchpoints were active and when the campaign was live. The second layer is engagement: whether shoppers scanned, tapped, viewed content, compared products or completed a guided journey. The third layer is outcome: sales, retailer PDP visits, basket behaviour or other commercial indicators where available.

The mistake is to jump directly from delivery to sales. That creates a black box. If sales increased, the campaign may take credit without knowing why. If sales did not increase, the campaign may be blamed even if engagement was strong and purchase happened elsewhere. Engagement data helps open the black box.

MyPlayer’s role in attribution is to capture the actions that happen between exposure and purchase. A QR code can identify store, fixture, product and campaign context. A touchscreen can show what shoppers explored. A product finder can reveal needs and preferences. A comparison tool can show which products are being considered together. These signals help explain the role of the media touchpoint.

Attribution also needs to respect the retailer journey. A brand may want to educate shoppers, but the retailer needs confidence that the digital experience will not leak demand to an external channel. That is why in-store attribution should include onward journey metrics such as retailer PDP clicks, store-specific calls to action or retailer-approved purchase routes.

The best attribution reports are not single-number verdicts. They tell a story: where the campaign ran, how shoppers engaged, which content performed, which products generated interest and how those signals compared with available sales or retailer data. That makes the report useful to media teams, shopper marketers, trade marketers and retail partners.

In-store retail media attribution will never be as neat as a last-click ecommerce report. But it can be more honest. Physical stores influence decisions in complex ways, and the measurement model should reflect that complexity rather than pretending every sale can be traced back to one touchpoint.
