One QR Code per Display vs One QR Code per Product

The question is not simply how many QR codes a display should have. The real question is how much work you are asking the shopper to do after they scan.

One QR code for an entire display can look neat, but it often creates friction. The shopper has already found a specific product physically. If the scan opens a menu of products, the shopper has to search again digitally. That is the opposite of a seamless journey.

One QR code per product is usually better when the shopper is comparing specific models, colours, sizes, plans or specifications. It preserves context. The shopper scans beside the product they are considering and lands directly in the relevant experience. That can be a story, comparison, offer, PDP route, setup guide or product finder result.

There are cases where one code per display makes sense. A single display-level QR code can work for a brand overview, a campaign video, a range finder, a competition or a guided product selector. It is less suitable when shoppers are standing in front of individual products and need product-specific information.

From a measurement perspective, product-level codes are also stronger. They reveal which products are generating interest rather than grouping all activity under a display-level session. That makes the data more useful for brands, retailers and category teams.

This is similar to pricing or product information. Retailers would rarely ask shoppers to read one generic price card and work out which product it applies to. QR journeys should follow the same principle: the digital entry point should match the product the shopper has already chosen to investigate.

The best approach is sometimes a combination. A display-level QR code can invite shoppers into a range experience, while product-level QR codes support direct product education. The key is to make the scan feel obvious, useful and connected to the physical object in front of the shopper.
