Static vs Dynamic QR Codes for Retail Campaigns

Static and dynamic QR codes can look identical to a shopper, but they behave very differently for the brand and retailer. A static code is fixed. Once printed, it usually points to one permanent destination. A dynamic code allows the destination or routing logic to be managed after printing.

Static codes can work for simple, evergreen needs: a warranty page, a permanent instruction page, a long-term customer support page or a fixed regulatory destination. They are simple and low maintenance. The drawback is that they are unforgiving. If the content changes, the printed asset may become outdated.

Dynamic codes are better suited to retail campaigns because retail changes. Promotions change. PDPs change. Products are replaced. Content is refreshed. Retailers request different destinations. A dynamic code gives the brand room to adapt without removing the physical display.

The choice is also about data. A static QR code may provide limited or basic scan reporting depending on how it is configured. A dynamic, platform-managed QR journey can capture richer engagement: sessions, content views, product interest, comparison behaviour, quiz responses and onward clicks.

For MyPlayer use cases, dynamic QR codes are usually the better fit because the goal is not just to send traffic somewhere. The goal is to launch a retail-specific experience, manage content by campaign or retailer, and measure how shoppers engage at the point of purchase.

A simple test is campaign lifespan. If the content will never change and measurement is not important, static can be acceptable. If the display must support updates, retailer differences, product changes, A/B testing or performance reporting, dynamic is usually the safer investment.

The exception is where the use case is deliberately narrow and unchanging. If the code only needs to show a safety document or permanent manual, static may be enough. If the code is part of shopper marketing, in-store retail media, product education or retailer conversion, dynamic gives the brand far more control.
