How Retailers Can Avoid Treating In-Store Media Like Digital Signage

Digital signage is useful, but it is not the same as in-store retail media. The difference matters because retailers that treat media as signage often end up selling low-value screen space rather than high-value shopper engagement.

Signage is usually about display. Retail media is about commercial influence. A screen loop can create awareness, but brands increasingly want to understand whether shoppers noticed, engaged, considered or acted. That requires more than content playback.

The first shift is from location to journey. Instead of asking where a screen can be installed, retailers should ask what decision the shopper is making in that location. Are they comparing products? Looking for reassurance? Choosing between price points? Trying to understand compatibility? The media experience should support that decision.

The second shift is from broadcast to participation. A passive screen talks at the shopper. An interactive journey allows the shopper to scan, tap, browse, compare, answer or continue. This creates a different type of value for brands because it produces behavioural signals, not just possible exposure.

The third shift is from proof of play to performance reporting. Proof of play has a role, especially for operational assurance. But it should not be the whole report. Retailers should add scans, sessions, product views, content interactions, comparison behaviour and onward actions where possible.

The fourth shift is from generic content to contextual content. In-store media should reflect the category, retailer, product, promotion and shopper mission. Content designed for a social feed or TV campaign may not work at the shelf edge without adaptation.

MyPlayer is relevant because it helps retailers connect the physical touchpoint to an interactive content journey. A display can still show video, but it can also lead to a QR experience, product story or touchscreen path that gives shoppers more control and gives brands more insight.

Retailers do not need to abandon digital signage. They need to elevate it. When screens are connected to interaction, content governance and measurement, they become part of a retail media proposition rather than a standalone signage estate.
