What Is Shopper Engagement?

Shopper engagement is the active attention and behaviour a shopper gives to a product, message, display or digital experience during the buying journey.

Engagement is different from footfall or exposure. A shopper may pass a display without noticing it, or see a screen without taking action. Engagement starts when the shopper does something: scans, taps, browses, compares, answers, selects or continues to another step.

In physical stores, engagement is valuable because it indicates interest before purchase. A shopper who views comparison content or completes a product finder is giving the brand and retailer a signal that sales data alone may not capture.

MyPlayer measures shopper engagement across QR codes, touchscreens and retail content journeys. The goal is not to identify individual shoppers unnecessarily, but to understand which content, products and touchpoints are helping decisions in store.

Engagement data should be interpreted with retail context. A low-interaction display may have poor placement, unclear signage, weak creative or the wrong call-to-action.
